Anura Kumara Dissanayake has officially taken oath as the 9th Executive President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, in a ceremony held at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo today. The swearing-in, overseen by Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, was attended by party supporters and well-wishers.
Dissanayake, popularly known as “AKD”, won the Sri Lankan Presidential Election 2024 after a historic run-off, defeating Sajith Premadasa of Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB). His victory marks a significant shift in Sri Lanka’s political landscape, as it is the first time a president has been elected through a second round of counting.

Dissanayake, the leader of the National People’s Power (NPP), campaigned on anti-corruption and political reform, positioning his party, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), at the forefront of a new political movement. His presidency is seen as a reflection of the public’s demand for change amidst the country’s ongoing economic and political challenges.
Hailing from Thambuttegama in the North Central Province, the 56-year-old holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Kelaniya and has been a member of the JVP since 1987.
This moment marks a turning point in Sri Lankan politics, with Dissanayake’s victory heralding a new era for the JVP and the country.
