President Anura Kumara Dissanayake Dissolves Parliament, Sets Dates for Upcoming Elections

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has officially signed the Extraordinary Gazette notification dissolving the Parliament of Sri Lanka, effective from midnight today (24). The Gazette notification has been forwarded to the Government Printer for publication, as confirmed by the President’s Media Division (PMD).

The Government Printer has acknowledged receipt of the dissolution notification. This action is executed under the powers granted by Article 70 of the Constitution of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and in accordance with Section 10 of the Parliamentary Elections Act, No. 1 of 1981.

The dissolution of Parliament takes effect immediately, with the new Parliament scheduled to convene on November 21, 2024. The election for new Members of Parliament is set for November 14, 2024. Additionally, the nomination period will run from October 4 to 12 noon on October 11, 2024, during which nomination papers will be accepted by the Returning Officers.
