CIOB Pushes for Rs 1 Trillion in Construction Projects, Announces “Construction Expo 2025”

CIOB Pushes for Rs 1 Trillion in Construction Projects, Announces "Construction Expo 2025"

The Ceylon Institute of Builders (CIOB) has presented their manifesto to all three leading political parties, emphasizing that if the country aims to achieve a 9.6% GDP contribution from the construction industry, at least Rs 1 trillion worth of work must be allocated to the sector.

Dr. Rohan Karunaratne, President of CIOB, stated that the institute had previously rescued 5,000 contractors, though only 2,500 remain active in the industry. He stressed the importance of supporting them over the next two years.

Dr. Karunaratne further highlighted that the private sector must unite and strengthen to sustain the construction industry, with price hikes posing a significant challenge in recent years. “As many claimed the cost of Sri Lankan construction was excessively high, we were tasked with preparing cost analyses for various building types.” He added that this document has since been submitted to the Sri Lankan Government and other relevant stakeholders.

In addition to promoting modern building practices and enhancing the professional competencies of builders, CIOB conducts several annual programs. These include the World Construction Symposium in partnership with the University of Moratuwa, the CIOB Exhibition, the Annual Awards Ceremony for Sustainable Construction, Green Mark Accreditation, and training programs like TRACS. CIOB also publishes the magazine “Construction Today,” submits industry recommendations to the National Budget, and assists in resolving disputes within the sector.

Looking ahead,

Dr. Karunaratne announced that CIOB is organizing the “Construction Expo 2025” to be held at the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Memorial Exhibition Centre, BMICH, from March 14-16, 2025. The event will feature the latest advancements in the building and construction sectors, with industry experts, stakeholders, and decision-makers in attendance.

The Expo will serve as an ideal platform for sourcing new products, networking, and exploring new business opportunities. Trade visitors from Sri Lanka and neighboring countries are expected to participate, showcasing innovative products and featuring the latest launches.
