The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) celebrated its inaugural Inter Unit Culinary Art Competition on September 3, 2024, at SLAF Station Sigiriya, under the guidance of Air Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa. The event, aimed at uncovering and showcasing the culinary talents of SLAF personnel, featured servicemen and women competing in a range of culinary disciplines, adhering to the high standards set by the World Association of Chefs’ Societies (WACS).
The competition attracted 128 SLAF competitors and 17 external participants, and was divided into two categories: Professional and Apprentice. Competitors showcased their talents in Art and Static Food Display, Live Cooking, and Bartending. For the first time, professionals from regional hotels were invited, bringing additional expertise and prestige to the event.
Winners were awarded medals, certificates, and opportunities for further training, including the chance to represent SLAF at the Culinary Arts Food Expo Competition 2025. The competition also aligns with SLAF’s vision to expand its Hospitality Management School, aiming to offer NVQ Level 4 certification to aspiring young professionals.
Distinguished guests, including senior SLAF officers and renowned chefs such as Chef Gerard Mendis and Chef Dimuthu Kumarasinghe, attended the event, underscoring its importance in promoting culinary excellence and fostering talent within the SLAF.
