Sri Lanka and France have signed a bilateral agreement to establish a Regional Centre for Maritime Studies in Sri Lanka. The agreement was signed on Wednesday by Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, General (Retd) Kamal Gunaratne, and Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the French Embassy in Colombo, Marie-Noëlle Duris.
The proposed Centre aims to become a hub of excellence in the Indian Ocean, focusing on academic and training collaborations in maritime safety and security, marine environmental conservation, and marine pollution response. The initiative is expected to enhance regional cooperation and elevate Sri Lanka’s position as a key player in maritime studies and governance.
