Sunshine Healthcare Expands into Digital Health with 22% Stake in Doc990

Sunshine Healthcare Lanka Limited (SHL), a subsidiary of Sunshine Holdings PLC (CSE: SUN), has acquired a 22% minority stake in Digital Health Private Limited (DHPL), the company behind Doc990.

The investment takes Sunshine Healthcare into the digital healthcare space and adds a new area to its growing healthcare business. It also brings Sunshine’s healthcare capabilities together with Dialog Axiata’s digital healthcare expertise through Doc990.

Doc990 connects patients, doctors, healthcare providers and corporates through mobile, web and call-based channels. The platform offers doctor appointments, digital consultations, payments and other healthcare services, giving patients more ways to access care.

Sunshine Healthcare Adds Digital Health to Its Business

The investment expands Sunshine Healthcare’s presence across the healthcare value chain.

The company already operates across pharmaceutical manufacturing, research and development, medical devices, pharmaceutical distribution and retail pharmacy. The investment in Doc990 now adds digital healthcare to this wider business.

Sunshine said the move also creates a more direct connection with patients.

Doc990 is operated by DHPL, a subsidiary of Dialog Axiata PLC. Through the platform, patients can connect with doctors and access healthcare services through digital and call-based channels.

The investment therefore brings together Sunshine Healthcare’s experience across several healthcare businesses with Dialog’s digital healthcare platform.

For Sunshine, partnerships have been an important part of its growth across the healthcare sector.

Its pharmaceutical agency business has been built through long-term relationships with international pharmaceutical principals. Some of these relationships have continued for more than four decades.

In 2020, Sunshine combined its healthcare operations with those of Akbar Brothers. This strengthened its pharmaceutical manufacturing capabilities and helped create a more integrated healthcare business.

Sunshine then entered into an equity partnership with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) in 2024. The partnership supported investments in manufacturing, distribution infrastructure, medical devices and pharmacy retail.

More recently, Sunshine partnered with India’s Zydus Lifesciences to establish a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Horana. This further strengthened its local production capabilities.

The investment in Doc990 adds digital healthcare to this growth journey.

Sunshine and Dialog See Further Opportunities in Digital Health

Shyam Sathasivam, Group Chief Executive Officer of Sunshine Holdings PLC, said partnerships have played a key role in building Sunshine Healthcare.

“Over the years, we have built and grown Sunshine Healthcare through robust partnerships. From our longstanding relationships with international pharmaceutical principals to our collaborations with Akbar Brothers, IFC and Zydus, we have consistently worked with partners who share our commitment to strengthening healthcare in Sri Lanka. Our investment in Doc990 continues this approach, bringing Dialog’s digital healthcare expertise alongside our established capabilities. We believe this combination presents an opportunity to bring healthcare services closer to patients and make accessing care simpler and more convenient.”

For Dialog Axiata, the investment marks the next stage in the growth of Doc990.

Supun Weerasinghe, Director/Group Chief Executive of Dialog Axiata PLC, said the platform was created to change how people access healthcare through technology.

“Doc990 was built with a vision to transform how healthcare is accessed through technology. As we enter its next phase of growth, Sunshine Healthcare’s investment creates new opportunities to build on this foundation, expand the role of digital health across the patient journey and strengthen Doc990’s contribution to a more connected healthcare ecosystem in Sri Lanka.”

The investment gives Sunshine Healthcare a new position in digital healthcare while building on its existing businesses across the healthcare sector.

It also brings together Sunshine Healthcare’s established healthcare capabilities and Dialog’s digital health experience through Doc990, with the companies looking to make healthcare access simpler and more connected for patients.
