Imported Car and Three-Wheeler Tyres Face Mandatory SLS Testing

Imported Car and Three-Wheeler Tyres Face Mandatory SLS Testing

Imported passenger car tyres and three-wheeler tyres will now need to meet Sri Lanka Standards (SLS) testing requirements. The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to present the Import and Export (Control) Regulations No. 08 of 2026 to Parliament.

The new rules set specific SLS standards for two types of imported tyres.

Which Tyres Are Covered?

First, imported passenger car tyres under HS Code 4011.10.90 must meet Sri Lanka Standard 1212. Next, pneumatic tyres for three-wheeled vehicles under HS Code 4011.90.10 must meet Sri Lanka Standard 1347.

The government introduced these changes through Extraordinary Gazette Notification No. 2508/27 on October 1, 2026.

As a result, importers of these tyres will need to meet the relevant SLS testing requirements.

New Rules Set Common Standards

The President submitted the proposal as Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development. The proposal followed recommendations from the Ministry of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development.

The new rules aim to support fair competition for local tyre makers. They also aim to improve safety and quality for consumers. In addition, the regulations update the current import rules for the two tyre categories.

The Cabinet has now approved the proposal for presentation to Parliament. This is the next step in putting the new import controls into effect.
