Rs.3 Billion Insulin Factory Set to Start Production in 2027

Rs.3 Billion Insulin Factory Set to Start Production in 2027

Sri Lanka’s first insulin manufacturing factory is expected to start production in 2027 after completing the required validation process.

The facility, built with an investment of more than Rs.3 billion, is located at the Koggala Export Processing Zone in Galle. Premium International Injectable (Pvt) Ltd operates the factory as a joint venture with the State Pharmaceuticals Manufacturing Corporation (SPMC).

Construction has already been completed. Production will begin once the required validation work is finished.

Insulin Among 33 Planned Medicines

Insulin will be one of the main products manufactured at the facility.

The factory also plans to produce anaesthetic drugs, painkillers and other pharmaceutical products. Over time, the company plans to expand production to 33 types of medicines.

Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa inspected the facility on October 17.

He said reducing dependence on imported medicines and increasing local production will be key government priorities over the next decade.

At present, around 85% to 90% of medicines needed by the hospital system are imported, according to the Ministry. Locally manufactured medicines account for about 10% to 15%.

Local Production Could Open Export Opportunities

The Ministry said the Government currently meets about 96% of hospital pharmaceutical supply requirements. However, procurement problems remain for 37 types of medicines because of a lack of suppliers.

Expanding local production could reduce foreign exchange spending on medicine imports. It could also create opportunities to earn export revenue.

Discussions are already underway to supply medicines to the Maldives through SPMC. Requests have also been received from countries including Timor-Leste.

A 15-year pharmaceutical supply agreement is already in place for the new factory.

Once domestic demand is met, the company plans to export its products, according to the Ministry.
