Government Ready for Constitutional Changes Anytime to Speed Up Action Against Crime – President

The government is ready to introduce constitutional amendments if necessary to speed up action against drug trafficking and crime, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said.

The President made the remarks while attending the 160th anniversary celebration of the Sri Lanka Police on September 3.

He said the government would not hesitate to make the changes needed to help create a peaceful country and tackle drug trafficking and crime.

President Dissanayake also praised the work of the Sri Lanka Police. He said police had carried out the highest number of drug raids over the past two years.

However, he said arrests must be followed by faster legal action.

The President stressed that suspects must face the law and receive punishment with the same urgency as their arrests.

He pointed to delays in the legal process as a major concern.

According to the President, criminals are aware that court and legal proceedings can take a long time. He said all relevant institutions must take steps to reduce these delays.

The government has already taken decisions to make the process more efficient, President Dissanayake said.

He added that the government has also introduced the legislation needed for this purpose.

“If constitutional amendments are necessary for this purpose, we will make them without hesitation,” President Dissanayake said.

He said the government would not hesitate to introduce constitutional amendments when they are needed for the well-being of the people.

The President did not specify which provisions of the Constitution could change. He also did not announce a timeline for any possible amendments.

The remarks signal that the government is keeping constitutional change on the table as it looks for ways to speed up legal action against drug trafficking and crime.
