Sri Lanka has reached a major milestone in healthcare after successfully performing its first AI-assisted robotic surgeries, introducing advanced surgical technology to the country’s medical sector.
The two procedures were carried out at Asiri Surgical Hospital in Colombo using an AI-assisted robotic system operated by specialist surgeons.
Precision Surgery with AI Support
One procedure involved the removal of a uterus from a woman in her 50s, while the second was a complex kidney-related surgery.
Medical experts said the robotic system does not perform operations independently. Instead, surgeons remain in full control, guiding robotic arms that replicate their hand movements with greater precision inside the patient’s body.
What Benefits for Patients?
According to Chief Operating Officer Dr. Samanthi de Silva, AI-assisted robotic surgery offers several advantages, including smaller incisions, reduced blood loss, a lower risk of infection, fewer surgical errors and faster recovery.
She added that the technology also allows surgeons to plan and rehearse procedures before the operation, improving surgical preparation.
Building Local Expertise
Dr. de Silva said the surgeon who carried out the procedures received specialised training in China. She added that more than 30 Sri Lankan doctors are expected to receive training in robotic surgical techniques.
She noted that wider use of the technology could reduce the need for patients to travel overseas for complex procedures, including prostate cancer surgery.
Health experts believe expanding AI-assisted robotic surgery to more hospitals could strengthen Sri Lanka’s healthcare system while improving access to advanced treatment within the country.
