Country Ranked Third Globally for Traffic Congestion

A new global ranking places the country as the third most traffic-congested in the world, highlighting the growing economic cost of longer commutes, higher fuel consumption and inefficient transport.

Country Ranked Third Globally for Traffic Congestion

Traffic congestion is placing increasing pressure on commuters, businesses and the wider economy after the country ranked as the third most traffic-congested in the world in the latest Numbeo Traffic Index 2026 Mid-Year.

The country recorded a Traffic Index score of 254.5, ranking behind only Nigeria and Costa Rica. Bangladesh, Kenya, Egypt, Peru, Iran, India and Colombia completed the global top 10.

More Than Just Longer Commutes

Heavy traffic affects more than travel times.

Longer journeys increase fuel consumption, raise transport costs, reduce productivity and make it harder for businesses to move people and goods efficiently.

For commuters, it also means spending more time on the road each day.

How the Ranking Is Measured

Numbeo compiles its Traffic Index using user-submitted data to compare traffic conditions across countries and cities.

The index measures average travel time, traffic inefficiencies, estimated fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. Higher scores indicate more severe congestion.

It also assesses commuter satisfaction, transport efficiency and the environmental impact of daily travel.

Why It Matters

Traffic congestion has become an economic challenge as well as a transport issue.

Businesses face higher logistics costs, employees lose productive working hours and increased fuel use adds to operating expenses.

At the same time, longer travel times contribute to higher vehicle emissions and place additional pressure on urban transport networks.
