The Government is reviewing requests to revise the retirement age for several public sector professions after receiving appeals from multiple sectors seeking to retain experienced officers in service for a longer period.
Health and Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said the Government is currently evaluating the requests before making a final decision on whether changes to the retirement age are necessary.
Several Professions Seek an Extension
According to the Minister, requests have come from a range of professional groups across the public sector.
These include members of the judiciary, including officials serving in the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal and High Court.
The Government has also received requests from certain professionals in the health sector and officers attached to the Department of Prisons.
Government Yet to Make a Decision
Dr. Jayatissa said several groups believe experienced officers remain capable of continuing their duties beyond the current retirement age.
He added that the Government will carefully examine every request before deciding whether to revise the existing policy.
The Minister acknowledged that opinions differ on the issue and said the final decision would follow a comprehensive review.
A change to the retirement age could affect workforce planning, recruitment, promotions and pension management across the public sector. It could also influence staffing levels in sectors where experienced professionals remain in high demand.
